Accomplishments of Haleiwa Main Street
DBA North Shore Chamber of Commerce
As of November 2005
One of the organization's main accomplishments is a town plan that cost $30,000 which was paid for by grants and donations raised by HMS. In May of 1991, a town plan was completed to provide a strategic plan for Haleiwa Town. "The Made in Haleiwa" plan has been the guiding document for Haleiwa Main Street/North Shore Chamber of Commerce for over 12 years now. It was facilitated and written by consultants, Community Development by Design, from Berkeley, California who lived in the Haleiwa area for three months while developing the plan.
339 business people and residents attended the community planning workshops that were the basis of the plan and another 66 key community leaders were interviewed. Even though the plan is almost 15 years old, it still provides critical guidance to the organization and others such as City planners for current projects.
Since then, several strategic planning processes have been completed, developing organizational plans. Other accomplishments are (in no particular order):
| |
Negotiated a new bypass design that was safer and brought more people into Haleiwa (1995). |
| |
Advocated for and raised money to get the Waialua Courthouse restored. HMS was nominated for HUD Best Practices for this project. |
| |
Got the Corps of Engineers, along with the community, to repair the bridge and repaint it (1993). In recent years, advocated for and got $2.6 million for the repair of the Bridge, which is currently undergoing restoration. |
| |

| |
Established a North Shore website, which is still "a work in progress." |
| |
Worked on obtaining funding and developing a master plan for sidewalks for Haleiwa Town, and advocated on behalf of the businesses, acting as the liaison between Haleiwa landowners and merchants and the City for the past eight years. |

This was about a $125,000 (cash and in-kind) project, for which Haleiwa Main Street and the North Shore Outdoor Circle raised the necessary funds and resources. Many people provided pro bono services to make this project possible. |
