Accomplishments for 2007 
• Anahulu Bridge, built in 1921 and a key landmark of Haleiwa and the North Shore, underwent a $3.1 million renovation due to the Chamber’s advocacy for at least five years.
• Acted as fiscal agent for a USDA grant of over $600,000 for a project that fixed 100 year-old irrigation systems on the North Shore to ensure consistent water supply to Kawailoa farmers,
Mokuleia filtration system and R-1 water, and repair of tunnel that brings water from Lake Wilson.
• Advocated and got $1.2 million allocated for planning of Laniakea/Chun’s road realignment/bypass.
• Wrote and were granted $100,000 state grant-in-aid for North Shore Disaster Preparedness Planning and Training.
• Wrote grant as fiscal agent for the Laniakea Honu Guardians and were awarded $30,000 for them to continue the education program at Laniakea.
• Our world-class website for the North Shore and the Chamber continues to improve at GoNorthShore.org with over 2.6 million requests annually.
• The Chamber’s second Annual Installation Dinner with the Director of DEBEDT was a great success. We highlighted the manufacturing businesses on the North Shore and the award- winning Waialua High School’s Robotics Team, for which we raised $1500.
• Partnered with Green Turtle Publications, one of our members, and produced a North Shore Map printed semi-annually (70,000 copies each printing) which is distributed island wide to major locations including the airport, car rental agencies, Pearl Harbor, hotel concierge desks and over 100 spots on the North Shore.
• Speakers at membership meetings: Paul Brewbaker, Rex Johnson, Kamehameha Schools.
• North Shore Driving Tour (a historical interpretation of North Shore) was completed and distributed through a partnership between The Dude Brothers and the Chamber.
• Haleiwa Town sign was refurbished.
• Weed Circle flower bed on Waialua end was replanted/upgraded.
• Business After Hours events were held at Grass Skirt Grill and Dole Plantation.
• Sponsored workshop on Loss Prevention for retail businesses.
• Worked on obtaining permits to move/preserve the Historic Telephone Exchange Building, built in either 1914 or 1931, to the grounds of the Waialua Community Association to be Chamber’s
permanent home with mini historical display.
• Wrote grants on behalf of and received $160,000 for Historic Haleiwa Gym renovation which included conversion from large capacity cess pool to new septic system, termite treatment, new
roof, painting of the building and other repairs and upgrades. |
